Insight Into The NDIS and The Categories Funded Under The Scheme

According to the recent study, there are around 4.3 million Australians with disabilities. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is established to provide funding to the people with permanent and significant disability. The NDIS offers support to the people with physical, sensory, psychology and cognitive disability. As a matter of the fact, NDIS is not a welfare scheme, but is implemented to support the participants who want to improve their skills and independence.

The NDIS funds a wide range of supports which are grouped into three different categories. Let us have a quick look into the support-based categories funded under the NDIS plan.

Core Support:

Core supports make it possible for the participants to complete their daily activities, and work towards their goals and objectives. They can also enjoy transportation support and assistance with completing household tasks. The main objective of ‘core support’ is to enable the participants to live autonomously. Under this category, people with disabilities can also enjoy the assistance with social and community participation.

Capital Support:

Under this category, the participants receive investment support, meaning that the funds can be used to purchase wheelchairs, bathing equipment, vehicle modification and other equipment that enable them to live independently. In addition, the funds can also be invested to modify building structures, fittings and fixtures that provide added support to their living.

Capacity Building Support:

Capacity Building Support enables NDIS participants to develop their skills and independence.  They can also avail assistance with community/social participation and to complete their workplace chores. Activities to improve their health, well-being, learning and skills are also covered under this category. The capacity building support is also aimed at strengthening the ability of the participants to improve their self-management capabilities.

The participants are allocated a budget for each of these categories.
