What Can NDIS Funding Be Used For?The NDIA has released a document on October 3, 2024 titled Supports that are ‘NDIS supports’. This document has provided a detailed description regarding what NDIS funding can be used for.
NDIS supports are described as the services, items and equipment that can be funded by the NDIS and fall into 37 distinct categories, all designed to help individuals with disabilities live more independently, achieve their goals, and participate in their communities.
What Makes a Support Eligible for NDIS Funding? For a support to be funded under the NDIS, it must directly address the individual’s disability-related needs. This means there must be a clear connection between the person’s impairment and the support being requested.
Additionally, the support must meet a series of criteria to ensure its appropriateness and alignment with the participant’s goals:
Relevant to Disability Needs:The support must address the disability or early intervention requirements that make the participant eligible for NDIS.
Goal-Oriented:The support should help participants work toward the goals outlined in their NDIS plan.
Facilitates Participation:Supports should empower participants to engage in social, economic, or community activities by overcoming disability-related barriers.
Value for Money:The NDIS assesses the cost-effectiveness of the support, comparing its benefits to alternative options.
Proven Effectiveness:There should be evidence that the support is beneficial for someone with similar needs, backed by best practices or the participant’s lived experiences.
Reasonable Expectations:The funding should account for the role of families, carers, and community supports. It should not replace what can reasonably be provided by informal networks.
What Is Not Funded by the NDIS?NDIS funding cannot be used for items or services unrelated to a participant’s disability needs. For instance, flights for holidays or a gym membership for general fitness would not qualify because these are considered wants or needs that apply broadly to all individuals, not specifically to those with disabilities.
