What are NDIS replacement supports? NDIS changes Oct 3, 2024
💠 What Are NDIS Replacement Supports?
NDIS replacement supports are services, items, or equipment that can substitute for existing supports in a participant’s plan under specific conditions. These replacements must:
✨ Replace Existing Supports: They substitute for an NDIS-funded support already included in the participant’s plan.
✨ Provide Equal or Greater Benefit: They must meet or exceed the functionality of the original support(s).
✨ Be Cost-Effective: They must cost the same or less than the support(s) being replaced. Replacement supports address specific disability-related needs without increasing the participant’s total budget.
💠 Example of Replacement Support:
A participant with complex communication needs may require a tablet as an alternative communication device. If this tablet is their sole means of communication and cannot be shared, it may be approved as the most suitable replacement for an existing support.
💠 Eligible Support Categories and Examples
Replacement supports often fall under:
✨ Consumables
✨ Assistive Technology
Examples include:
✨ Household appliances (e.g., washing machines, dishwashers)
✨ Smartwatches
✨ Tablets or smartphones
✨ Accessibility or communication apps
💠 Important Notes on Replacement Support Applications:
✨ If your request for a replacement support is not approved, you cannot ask for a review of the decision.
✨ You must wait 12 months before reapplying for the same replacement support unless your circumstances change, and a Plan Reassessment occurs, allowing you to reapply sooner.
✨ Approved replacement supports are only valid for your current NDIS plan. You will need to reapply if you wish to include the support in your next plan.
